During the hardships of the last of the Great Depression, Linnet Lewis transforms herself from a meek housewife into a businesswoman and lifts her family out of destitution. She begins as the proprietress of a boarding house and then, by hard work, bravery, and acumen she acquires other businesses. She is separated from her alcoholic husband, the love of her life, who is newly prosperous again and wants to re-unite. He irrationally opposes her business activities. Also the town’s most prominent doctor wants to marry her. The interesting tenants of her boarding house have needs and stories that interplay. World War II begins, bringing further financial and emotional challenges to Linnet and the other people of the story. This is the first in a series of novels about these people of the American South.
